It only seems right to call this one ‘The power of the human mind’ as it’s a very vague heading for my blog spot. What is the power of the human mind? How does it work? Just what are the limitations? How do we become to be conscious? What is it?
Some scientists believe that consciousness is simply a by-product of complexity. That the reason we see, hear, smell, taste, touch and feel are simply the results of complete random events and that the human brain is simply following normal physical laws. So, if you follow the view of the scientist, these words and this information has no meaning, in fact, nothing has a creator and nothing has feelings and meaning; other than those that mean something to themselves.
This is where it gets interesting. ‘When a goal matters enough to a person, that person will find a way to accomplish what at first seemed impossible.’- Nido Qubein. Take for instance the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King is just one man, it shouldn’t be said that he did it alone but, the inspiration and courage and determination of one man’s goal managed to change an entire population’s and worldwide laws and views and social behaviours. Martin Luther King was a Christian and set up the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957 intent on non-violence, peace and harmony. His goals where first achieved in 1962 when the first black student enrolled at The University of Mississippi. Incredible or what? Just 5 year to undo century’s worth of social behaviour. The battle and the violence continued for some years but nowadays this guy is a national hero, a treasure, a worldwide figure of peace and harmony. The power of the Human Mind!
Ok, there are other areas to cover. Buildings & Computers. The age old expression ‘you can’t have one without the other’. In the techno age as we’re now in, we can build some of the most impressive, tallest, strongest buildings. Take the Hilton Hotel Tower in Manchester. It’s absolutely huge! 169 meters, 554ft HUGE! Incredible ‘magic’ if we are not designed to think and feel. Building and designing and testing buildings wouldn’t be possible without a computer though. So, someone designed computers. Pretty amazing things, they can calculate up to 100gigaFLOPS whatever they are? Check it out for yourself. So the power of the human mind has created something which can calculate equations much faster and much more complex than the human mind. But a computer just doesn’t match up to the immense power of the human mind. A computer does not feel emotion, they can simulate emotion with clever software and electrics (both created by man) but that’s not the same thing as consciously experiencing something, like being dumped by your girlfriend or kicked in the nuts, or both!
The point I’m getting to slowly is that we are conscious. We are not just accidents of evolution. We have a mind and free will and they are gifts to us. But, sometimes, if not all the time, the power of the human mind actually destroys us. We are so conscious and self aware that we seek desires and luxuries. We put items and possessions at greater importance than the reason we are able to feel/think/see them. God gave us our minds and free will so we could live but more often than not, we forget to thank Him for all we have.
We are incredible beings with powers that exceed us. We should use them and show our appreciations to the creator of all things wonderful. A butterfly, a fox, a lizard are all conscious beings but they lack a gift that we humans have. It is this gift which is causing our own destruction and the only real answer is salvation. What Martin Luther King managed to do is testament to the strength of God and his creation. The power of the Human Mind was created by God and he can lead us. If we choose a life without God, our consciousness will lead us into temptation and sin.
